Announcing an international competition for facade projection
Prize money totaling €45,000 will be awarded to the best artistic works
Now in its third year, the facade projection festival Genius Loci Weimar has again launched an international competition for projection art. Artists from the fields of video mapping, projection, interactive- and visual design as well as architecture are encouraged to apply as of now.
The festival is seeking concepts for historic facades in the city of Weimar. This year, as before, the event has at its disposal three buildings that are as artistically challenging as they are historically interesting. These are the German National Theatre Weimar
(DNT), the Duchess Anna Amalia Library and the house at Herderplatz, including the Ohm Krüger bust.
A specific requirement for the artistic works is the development of an independent visual language that should avoid protracted historical retelling or clichéd motifs of the city of Weimar. In the foreground is the ‘genius loci’ – the spirit of the location – which
will be rendered visible using the latest techniques of the media art of video mapping.
Artists intending to participate should submit their work in the format of a 30-second clip by 15 April 2014. The three best and most popular works will be chosen by public voting on the website and in an exhibition in Weimar, as well as by expert jury. The winners will receive prize money totaling €45,000
for the implementation of their projects.
The finished facade projections will be presented in a live show during the festival, which will take place from 15 to 17 August 2014.
The competition rules as well as detailed information on the facades are available on the website www.genius-loci-weimar.org.
About the festival
Genius Loci Weimar is an annual festival for site-specific audiovisual art and above all (interactive) projections for facades, spaces and buildings. The festival combines the historical spirit of Weimar and the contemporary technology of video mapping, a projection technique that incorporates the projection surface
in the image design, giving an extra dimension to unmoving objects and creating the effect of optical illusions.
Genius Loci Weimar – an international competition as well as exhibition and symposium – provides a thorough overview of current video mapping productions from around the world. All culture enthusiasts are invited to the award-winning projection shows as well as to the Genius Loci Club. Today, the
festival is considered a meeting point for the international video mapping scene as well as a professional audience from the areas of architecture, media art, design, performing arts and visual arts. In 2013 the festival was attended by over 12,000 people.
Genius Loci Weimar takes place as part of Weimar Summers and in cooperation with the festival organizers MXperience gUG, the Foundation of Weimar Classics, the Department of Media Architecture at the Bauhaus University Weimar, and the Gaswerk
Weimar project- and design workshop. The festival is also supported by the Thuringian Ministry of Economy, Labour and Technology, the Cultural Foundation of the State of Thuringia, the City of Weimar, the Best Western Premier Grand Hotel Russischer Hof, Barco GmbH, and by AED Rent GmbH. Media partners this year are De:Bug magazine,
ByteFM and Whisper.
